“Measure silica in the boiler” is not a complete sampling specification. The useful point depends on the plant type, the chemistry programme and whether the objective concerns boiler water, feedwater or steam purity. The relationship between concentrations at different points must be understood before one result is used to infer another.

The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) publishes cycle-chemistry guidance for fossil, combined-cycle and industrial power plants. Its 2024 instrumentation document describes the role of sample points and online instruments and notes that silica measurement choices depend on the boiler arrangement and the relationship between water and steam concentrations. The guidance is specific to the plant contexts it covers; it is not a universal prescription for every boiler. Read the IAPWS instrumentation guidance.

Start with the plant and objective

Record the cycle configuration and whether the question is about feedwater, drum boiler water, steam or another point in the treatment train. Define what decision the result will support and which operating conditions matter to that decision.

Make sample handling part of the design

Document the sample take-off, conditioning and transport arrangement. Agree how the sample relates to the process stream and how results will be reported. If a laboratory method is used for verification, align the location, timing and method basis before comparing readings.

Keep the control boundary clear

Use the plant’s chemistry programme, engineering guidance and equipment requirements for target values and corrective action. An online result can support operational visibility; it does not establish a universal steam-purity limit or replace the site’s approved procedures.

The 3S-CL brochure lists silica and boiler water/condensate sample types. A specific method and sample arrangement require application review. See the silica and steam-cycle guide, silica analyser information and boiler/high-purity-water applications hub.
