Aluminium results after coagulation are easiest to interpret when the treatment stage, sample point and operating history are clear. A single result cannot, by itself, explain whether a change came from the raw water, chemical dosing, clarification, filtration or sample handling.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate’s 2025 report for England discusses aluminium indicator failures in the context of treatment performance, including coagulation, filtration, pH control and residual management. It describes these as investigation considerations, not a universal diagnosis or a 3S analyser setpoint. Read the DWI’s source discussion.

Map the sample to the process

Write down whether the sample is taken before coagulation, after clarification, after filtration or later in the supply. Confirm the treatment train and any sample conditioning between the process and the analyser. The location determines which part of the process a result can help describe.

Review operating context

For an unexpected trend, check the site’s records for relevant changes in water quality, dosing, pH, flow, filter run or backwash, maintenance and sampling. Compare the same point and reporting basis over time. Treat process records as evidence to review, not as proof of cause.

Set the verification route first

Agree how an online result will be compared with the site’s applicable laboratory method and sampling procedure. Record the time, location, units, sample preparation and method for each comparison. Keep process-trend information distinct from statutory sampling and formal compliance decisions.

The current 3S-CL brochure lists aluminium as a parameter, while the supplied aluminium datasheet describes the specific method information. Confirm the current configuration, range and sample suitability with PMA rather than inferring them from the parameter name. See the residual aluminium monitoring guide and the aluminium analyser page.

For an application review, use the PMA contact form and include the treatment stage, sample conditions and monitoring objective.
