When a supply uses more than one source, a nitrate result is meaningful only when the sample location and blend context are known. A source-water measurement, a point after blending and a treated-water sample answer different questions. Write the question before choosing the point.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate explains that water companies use source monitoring to identify risk and have used blending higher-nitrate water with lower-nitrate water, and specialised treatment where necessary, as remedial approaches. That public guidance describes broad industry practice; it does not define a site-specific operating limit or the suitability of a particular analyser. See the DWI’s nitrate information.

Identify the decision

Is the monitoring intended to describe a source, compare sources, check a blend, or follow treated water? State who will use the result and what response it should inform. Keep the distinction between operational trend data and the site’s required sampling and compliance programme clear.

Map sources, blend and treatment

Document each sample point against the flow path. Record which sources were contributing, relevant flow or operating changes, the date and time, the reporting basis and any sample conditioning. Without that context, two values may appear to disagree when they represent different water.

Define comparison and response

Agree the method and laboratory verification route before a trend becomes important. Compare measurements taken at a relevant time and location, using the same reporting basis. Set escalation and review through the site’s own procedures rather than borrowing a threshold from another source or application.

The current 3S-CL brochure lists nitrate and potable water, but the method, range and sample suitability need confirmation for the proposed application. Start with the drinking-water nitrate guide, the online nitrate analyser information and the drinking-water application hub.
