Online Nutrient Analysers for Wastewater Treatment
The 3S online analyser platform supports parameter-specific wet chemistry for municipal and industrial wastewater. Nutrient and process measurements are configured around the sample matrix, expected range, solids loading and treatment objective.
01
Ammonia and ammonium monitoring
The online ammonia and ammonium analyser can provide repeated measurements at selected wastewater process points. The chemistry and range must be chosen for the actual stream rather than assumed from a generic wastewater description.
02
Nitrate through the treatment process
Online nitrate measurement can be considered where more frequent information is needed around biological treatment, polishing stages or final effluent. PMA reviews the sample, expected concentration and measurement purpose before configuration.
Compare the measurement and sample-point questions in Nitrate & Nitrite Monitoring.
03
Phosphate and total phosphorus
Phosphate and total phosphorus are different analytical requirements. Total phosphorus involves a digestion stage, so the correct configuration depends on whether the process needs reactive phosphate information or a complete phosphorus determination.
04
Municipal and industrial matrices
Influent, activated-sludge mixed liquor, intermediate treatment streams and final effluent differ greatly in colour, solids and chemistry. Industrial wastewater can add further interferences, so the sampling point and matrix should be reviewed before selecting a method.
05
Filtration and sample conditioning
Suspended solids can affect optical measurement and wet-section reliability. A suitable fast loop, reservoir or filtration arrangement may be required to present a representative sample without changing the analytical objective. Review sample conditioning for online wet-chemistry analysers.
06
Process information and compliance context
Online results can help treatment teams see changes between manual samples and support dosing or process review. They do not replace accredited laboratory analysis, statutory sampling or permit-defined procedures where those are required.

WASTEWATER APPLICATION REVIEW
Match the analyser to the nutrient and sample matrix
Define the nutrient species, process location, normal and peak range, solids condition, measurement frequency and intended operational use.
01.
Nutrient species
Confirm ammonia, ammonium, nitrate, phosphate or total phosphorus.
02.
Process location
Identify influent, biological stage, tertiary treatment or final effluent.
03.
Concentration range
Provide normal operation, expected peaks and the required reporting range.
04.
Solids and colour
Describe suspended solids, background colour and changing process conditions.
05.
Sample conditioning
Review transport delay, representative sampling and filtration needs.
06.
Quality assurance
Define comparison checks and how online results will support site procedures.
Wastewater nutrient analysis is not one universal method
The analyte, matrix and process stage determine the chemistry, range, conditioning and maintenance approach. Configuration begins with the treatment question.
Four nutrient routes
Ammonia or ammonium, nitrate, phosphate and total phosphorus require distinct review.
Two sample streams
The general 3S-CL platform supports two measurable sample streams.
IP54
Designed for indoor installation; suitable protection is required outdoors.
Laboratory context
Online measurements support, but do not replace, required accredited analysis.
Wastewater parameters beyond nutrients
The 3S range also includes selected metals, phenol, sulphate, cyanide and other parameter-specific configurations for suitable municipal or industrial streams.
| Parameter | Selected analytical chemistry |
| Measuring range | Method specific |
| Sample matrix | Colour and solids considered |
| Analysis time | Parameter dependent |
| Reagent use | Varies by parameter and frequency |
| Sample conditioning | Filtration where required |
| Installation | Indoor; suitable protection outdoors |
| Outputs | According to ordered configuration |
| Verification | Confirm current parameter datasheet |

Where nutrient measurements may be considered
Sampling location should follow the treatment objective and provide a representative stream for the selected analytical method.
Biological treatment
Review ammonia, ammonium and nitrate around the process stages where nitrogen conversion is being assessed.
Phosphorus removal
Choose phosphate or total phosphorus according to the treatment and reporting objective.
Final effluent
Use frequent online information within the wider sampling, laboratory and permit-management programme.
Online nutrient analysis supports process understanding
The value comes from a representative sample, the correct chemistry and a clear plan for using and checking the results.
Discuss a wastewater nutrient-monitoring application
Share the nutrient species, treatment stage, expected concentration range, solids condition and intended use with PMA, then arrange an application review.
